Develop your skills to facilitate learning online

Facilitating Learning Online in the North (FLO North)

FLO North training develops the skills needed to confidently and effectively facilitate online training and learning in Northern, rural, and remote communities. Through a safe and inclusive online environment, participants gain an understanding of teaching and learning in online and blended formats and develop basic technical and facilitation skills through individual and group activities.

This course has been adapted to be relevant to trainers and educators across the North. Built on an open educational resource (OER) shared by BCcampus, the FLO Fundamentals course began in 2013 as a partnership between Royal Roads University and BCcampus. Taking part in FLO North requires some experience in facilitating or instructing, the ability to navigate and use web-based environments, and familiarity with the North.

The four-week FLO North course begins on September 1, 2021. Weekly conference calls and activities provide the experience of learning and teaching within a supportive community of peers. Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate of completion.

FLO North will be facilitated by Caroline Sparks and Sylvia Riessner, both of whom have extensive experience facilitating online with diverse participants across the North. Caroline is the Learning Consultant for the Recreation North Training Program and a Yukon-based consultant with more than 30 years experience working across the North. Sylvia, currently based in BC, is an educational consultant who taught in online and blended environments in BC and Yukon for 18 years. Sylvia has facilitated many FLO courses for instructors and learning designers from post-secondary institutions since 2015.
