Katelyn Hamre recently completed the Recreation North Training Program. Katelyn lives in Ignace, Ontario and earned a Certificate in Northern Recreation management in May 2021. Katelyn shared a bit about her experience.
My name is Katelyn Hamre. I am originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario but relocated to Ignace, Ontario to build a life with my family. My previous education has been in Human Resources and Social Work. When I relocated to Ignace I began volunteering in my community, which then opened up doors to my position as a Recreation Programmer. I have been in this position for nearly 3 years with the Township of Ignace. This is one of the many hats I wear within my community.
My experience with the Certificate in Northern Recreation Management has been incredibly beneficial in helping me become a stronger leader. I had very little training and inconsistent records when I began in my position to assist in training me along the way. Recreation North has taught me how to professionally keep records, engage & stay connected with my community as well as skills that enhanced my communications with management, Mayor & Council and partnership proposals.
What I appreciated most about this learning event was getting to listen and connect with other people in communities that were very similar to mine. Most of us are located in rural settings where we often get missed on the map and really have to improvise when it comes to programming with limited resources. It was a great opportunity to use technology to our advantage, especially during COVID to remind each other that we are all facing the same challenges.
If I could stay connected to Recreation North forever I would! I hope to participate in the upcoming Professional Development Certificate, I have really enjoyed working with Caroline, Amanda and the rest of the participants. I have been a part of the Pilot Program, the Northern Leadership Certificate and now the Advanced Management Certificate. Being a part of Recreation North has been the biggest blessing in helping me develop the skills I needed to help my department thrive!
