Kayleen Alexie recently completed the Recreation North Training Program. Kayleen lives in Inuvik, NT and earned a Certificate in Northern Recreation Management in April 2021. Kayleen shared a bit about her experience.
My name is Kayleen Alexie. I’m from Inuvik, NT and this is where I currently live. Right now I am a full-time student working on 2 diplomas. Before going back to school full time in December, I was employed with the Town of Hay River as the Customer Service Clerk at the Don Stewart Recreation Centre for 6 years.
During my time there I have had a lot of experience in Recreation and knew that taking the programs would benefit my job at the time. Even though I decided to take the school route in a different direction from Recreation, I knew I would still benefit from the programs.
My experience with the Management Certificate program was very positive. All of the advanced learning events are very beneficial and hands on. The learning events give you some experience in proposal writing, understanding legal risk, financial reports and evaluations.
I appreciate these harder learning events because you have a better understanding of how to put these reports together, what information is needed, and it sets you up for success for the future. The learning events that took place over 4 weeks were a little intimidating, but our trainer Caroline set up zoom meetings to explain the learning events and answer any questions that you did have. The trainer (Caroline) was also very helpful with all of the questions through email that I had.
One highlight for me is putting together a proposal and a financial report on a program that was 100% made up and it was challenging but after it was put together, so worth it!
