Prepared for a career in recreation

Molly Okalik recently completed the Recreation North Training Program. Molly, the Recreation Coordinator for the Hamlet of Whale Cove, earned a Certificate in Northern Recreation Leadership in October 2019. Molly shared a bit about herself.

I live in a small community called Whale Cove. I was raised here and have lived here all my life. I am a single mother of three beautiful children, who I love with my whole being. My hard work and dedication is for my kids who inspire me and motivate me to work hard and to explore in life. I want to be the best role model I can be for my kids.

I took a couple of programs with Nunavut Arctic College which helped me get where I am today. I started working as the Recreation Coordinator with the Hamlet of Whale Cove in June 2018 and I attended my first Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut Conference in October 2018. The conference is where I heard about the Recreation North Training Program and I became interested instantly.

Recreation North teaches  you things that you weren’t trained for. It has helped me so much to understand how to get programs going and where to start. I didn’t know a lot when I first started in my position. I was lost about how recreation works or what it had to offer. Now that I have completed the Recreation North Training Program, I am so excited for the future programs I can plan using the helpful tips I have learned. Plus, it’s a fun program, even though it’s all done online and over the phone. Be prepared to think of what types of programs you would like to offer to the youth of your community.
